Due to his unmatched and undefeated track record, Canelo Alvarez is considered the best boxer in the world, on a pound-for-pound basis. This is an incredible achievement considering he is still relatively young at 29 years old, with a career that is still very much on the rise.
At present, Alvarez is the world’s middleweight champion and the best in his league. This ranking system is operated on a lineal system. This means that the current champion is ranked in terms of whoever beat the last champion. This makes for a very competitive and high-stake boxing match culture, creating much hype around current world champions. But this is not to say that Alvarez is not deserving of this.
Previous to this championship, he also held the WBC middleweight title, the WBC light middleweight title, and others.
Contrary to what many people may think, Alvarez had no intention of becoming a professional boxer. But this all changed very quickly after the age of 15 when he won the junior national championship. In his first 19-months as a professional boxer, Alvarez recorded 11 knockouts out of the 13 matches he participated in. The fate of his career was sealed.

So, how did Alvarez fall into the incredible boxing career he has today? It all stemmed from being bullied in the barrio in which he grew up due to his red hair, freckles, and light skin. As clich as it might sound, Alvarez quickly learned to defend himself and his family name when he learned how to box. He soon won his way to the top of the amateur ranks in his local region, and the trajectory of his career took off shortly after this.
Get to know Alvarez a little better with these fun facts:
Originally, Alvarez was born Santos Saul Alvarez Barragan in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. He was born to Mexican-born-and-bred parents, Santos Alvarez and Ana Maria Barragan on 18 July 1990.
While it may not be the same in different parts of the world, Spanish culture and custom encourage you to adopt both a paternal and maternal family name as your own. His first name, Canelo, is derived from the masculine word for ”cinnamon” in Spanish. This was and still is his nickname due to the color of his hair.
Yes, Alvarez is a high-school dropout, but some of the world’s most successful sports stars, entrepreneurs and business people are. He dropped out of school in the eighth grade, much to the disapproval of his parents, to pursue his boxing dreams. He soon fell in love with the sport after witnessing his oldest brother’s professional boxing debut.
As most people may know, boxing is a very lucrative career choice. Alvarez is no stranger to fortune and is now worth over $120 million. To add to this, he signed a five-year fight contract with Oscar De La Hoya’s promotion company in 2018, which is worth $356 million. He amassed earnings of over $95 million between 2018 – 2019, alone.
Alvarez is a huge fan of Michael Jackson and for very good reason. His favorite training and pre-match song is ”Beat It”, which he likes to listen to because of the rhythm. Ultimately, it’s this rhythm that helps him maintain his world-renowned pace and tempo throughout his matches. Which, as it turns out, is a huge marker for success.
Having been raised with horses his entire life, it’s no wonder the Alvarez has a deep love and respect for these animals. He has stated that he also likes to ride his horses bareback – without a saddle or stirrups for guidance. Riding a horse bareback takes tremendous skill, balance, and stamina. To add to this, you also need a keen sense of coordination – the true mark of a great boxer.
Not only is Alvarez virtually undefeated in his boxing category, but he is probably most famous for knocking out his opponents in the ring. In total, he has fought 52 bouts, 49 of which have been professional wins. Out of these 49 wins, 34 were total knockouts!
Alvarez is one of the youngest of eight children, he has six brothers, all of whom are boxers too. On June 28, 2008, all seven of the brothers participated in a boxing match of their own- making world history. Alvarez managed to defeat future IBF Lightweight Champion, Miguel Vasquez.
Is there anything more iconic or gut-wrenching than losing your undefeated streak to none other than Floyd Mayweather? In the world of boxing, probably not. On September 14, 2013, Alvarez lost to Mayweather Junior at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. This resulted in a majority decision against him after 12 rounds, thereby stripping him of both championship titles he already held at the time. Despite his loss, the match itself generated over $150 million, which guaranteed Alvarez a nice sum of $12.5 million for the match. Talk about softening the blow!
