10 Summer Activities to Try This Year, Ranked by Calories Burned

Once all the snow has melted, the obvious outdoor workout is to lace up your shoes and go outside for a jog. However, now that the weather is cooperating, you’ve got so many more options that are way more fun. (Just don’t forget to wear your sunscreen, OK?)

Here’s how many calories you’d burn in 30 minutes for the following activities (calculated for a 155-pound person):

  1. Playing frisbee burns 112 calories per half-hour. Bonus: It’s a great way to exercise your dog as well.

  2. Archery burns 120 calories. If you’re idea of a fun Friday night is playing darts at the pub, then this workout will be a bullseye.

  3. Horseback riding burns 149 calories. It might seem like the horse is doing all the work, but horseback riding takes wayyy more leg and core strength than you might think.

  4. Badminton burns 167 calories. This classic yard game ain’t a bad workout. Not bad at all

  5. Pulling weeds burns 172 calories. That’s right: Digging that crabgrass out of your tomato gardens burns more calories than a game of badminton.

  6. Kayaking burns 186 calories. Row, row, row your boat is your new workout mantra.

  7. Golfing (without a cart) burns 205 calories. Skip the wheels and the caddy: Lugging the clubs yourself is a guaranteed hole-in-one for your workout regimen.

  8. Water skiing burns 223 calories. Burning calories while standing? Sounds perfect.

  9. Tennis burns 260 calories. Grab a racquet and ace your workout on the court.

  10. Beach volleyball burns 298 calories. That sand will serve up a major leg workout. And no, you don’t have to wear a bikini.

Jogging on the treadmill or lifting weights are fine and dandy, but don’t forget to switch up your routine with these fun activities—before the temperatures dip back into the teens. (But don’t worry: Here are the calorie-burning activities to try in the winter, and here are low-effort ways to burn 200 calories all year round.)
