PRINCESS ANNE, Md.– The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's baseball team has released its 2014 schedule, it was announced Friday.
The Hawks are set to play 14 home games at Hawk Stadium and 16 games in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The team has put together an out-of-conference schedule that consists of teams all over the East Coast, several which are coming off of solid seasons in 2013. The Hawks open up their exhibition this fall with a home contest against Salem Community College (N.J.) on Saturday, Oct. 5. The team will then travel to Delaware Tech a week later, before hosting the annual alumni game on Oct. 19. The team will finish the fall with its Maroon and Grey World Series in the last week of October. UMES travels to Tampa, Fla., to begin the regular season when the Hawks play at South Florida from Feb. 14-16. USF went 36-22 a year ago, including a 25-5 record at the USF Baseball Stadium. The Bulls nearly advanced to the NCAA Regionals but fell 2-1 to Rutgers in the Big East Championship game.
The Hawks will stay out of the state for their next four games as they play at George Washington on Feb. 19, before going to Georgia Southern for a three-game set beginning on Feb. 21. The Hawks face a stiff test in GSU, where the Eagles won 27 games last season and held a national ranking for most of the year. Following their series with Ga. Southern, UMES hosts Georgetown for their home opener on Feb. 26. The maroon and grey will then hit the road for five games over the next week. UMES plays at Virginia Military Institute (VMI) on March 1, before engaging in a double header with Buffalo and VMI the following day. The team travels to Mount St. Mary's (Md.) for two games on March 4-5. UMES comes back for a five-game homestand beginning with two doubleheaders against NJIT on Feb. 8-9. The team takes two days off before capping off action with a single game against UMBC. The Hawks begin conference play with a three-game tilt at Coppin State the next weekend, before heading down Tobacco Road in North Carolina to take on Duke and UNC-Greensboro that week. Duke went 18-13 at home last year, while UNCG returns the Valley Baseball League's top professional prospect to lead a strong squad in 2014. The team comes home for three games from Feb. 22-23 to face Norfolk State, who went 12-12 in MEAC play last season. Following one game at Towson a few days later, UMES hosts 2013 MEAC Regular Season Champion, Delaware St., for three games to close out the month of March.
April begins with a tilt at UMBC, before the Hawks play four games in Princess Anne over the next six days. The team hosts Coppin St. on April 5-6 and then is home for a single-game against Navy on April 9. UMES then engages in a nine-game road trip, beginning with three games at Norfolk St. (April 12-13) and two at Lehigh (April 15). UMES makes its way to Rt. 13 rival, Delaware St., for three conference games and concludes the trip with a tilt against Georgetown at Shirley Povich Field on April 22. The Hawks split the series with GU last season, including a 17-15 victory at home. UMES takes on George Washington at home on April 23, but will be the visiting team once again on April 26-27 with a conference series at Coppin State. The Hawks conclude regular season play by hosting the Spartans of Norfolk St., on May 3-4. The MEAC Tournament will once again be held in Norfolk, Va., at Marty L. Miller Field from May 13-17.
